The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Domain joins using the FQDN also fail. To resolve this issue either delete the NT4Emulator registry value on the Active Directory domain controllers in the destination domain if Windows NT 4.
Otherwise, set the following registry value on the Windows 7 or Windows Server R2 client before attempting to join the domain:. This registry setting allows the Active Directory domain controllers with the NT4Emulator setting to respond normally to the requesting client avoiding Windows NT 4. In the case of the join by FQDN, the joining client does not receive an adequate response to the LDAP pings it sends to the domain controllers at the beginning of the domain join process.
The helper domain controller responds but the joining client considers the response incomplete. After receiving the same replies from all domain controllers located using DNS, it falls back to performing a NetBIOS name query for the FQDN domain name to locate a domain controller, however this gets no response and the join operation fails.

I am Googled out I have searched far and wide across both Google and Spiceworks and can't find the answer I need. My new laptop came in on Friday last week and I was in the process of installing all the necessary software for the last few days in between doing my real job.
I made it through most of the programs and applied patches for Windows along the way. Today was the first day I logged straight into the new machine for my daily activity and the other machine was just on standby for the programs I haven't installed yet. When I first got the machine, I joined it to the domain right away. After a reboot today after installing a few patches and a few other program installs that I didn't keep detailed track of , I couldn't log into the domain.
I logged off PC 2 and was able to log in successfully with the same password I was typing into PC 1 where it didn't work. I ended up joining back to the workgroup and have been unsuccessful at joining back to the domain since. However, they see me on the network and can reach my files.
They deleted the old computer name, and I have tried multiple computer names, but I'm not sure what's going on. Is there anything I can check? I don't know why I've been on the domain for 3 days with no issues and all of the sudden it doesn't want to work.
Kinda puts a damper on the excitement of having 16GB memory and screaming fast machine. I don't want to go through another three days of configuration and installation!!! I'll also remember to turn on system restore before I do anything :.
I noticed some antivirus software disables this. This is definitely required. If this service is stopped, the computer may not authenticate users and services, and the domain controller cannot register DNS records. Make sure that the recent patching didn't hose up your network settings and change them all to public again.
Just curious, have you verified that you have the permissions to join a computer to your domain? But the "the specified network name is no longer available". Can you PING the domain controller? Either will work, most of the time, and seems to affect Win7 the most. You might find out if this may be the case in your network. Remove antivirus and malware programs and try joining the domain again. Note remove, not disable. It was originally locked, but I unlocked it and then on second thought removed it. Thanks to all for the feedback. I at least have a few things to do tomorrow to try again.
I can only spend a few hours on this tomorrow or I'm going to have to start back at square one. I hope one of these suggestions does the trick!
Seems like it's just being finicky. I would even suggest attempt adding to the domain using an alternate account with rights to add to the domain.
Ran into this before new windows 7 machine. I have found out this will work until you need to join the domain then you get a message that the PC can't find a DNS entry for the AD server. I set this up in a test lab and found the same problem you are describing. Thanks, Gary. I'll check it out in the morning.
I have a lot to look into, so I'm hoping it's one of the above! Fanatik - I don't know what you mean by the "reset", but we did try multiple names for the PC and remove all traces of previous computer names from AD. Only one DC, and I'll have to look into possible errors tomorrow.
As for the new SID, I have renamed it and immediately tried to reconnect to domain, but I'll add the extra reboot in there to see if that makes a difference after the rename. I'm using the admin account to add to the domain, but it still gives the "no longer available" name.
I was logged into the local machine with the administrator account when I tried to do this. So, you're logged in to the local machine with the local administrator account, but are you using a domain account with account operator or domain admin access to add it to the domain when prompted?
You can create the computer account in AD before adding the computer to the domain, with the computer name you want it to have. Create the computer account in the appropriate OU then reset the account. When you add the computer to the domain from the computer's end, it will prompt for your domain credentials, make sure that the account you use has domain admin or account operator privileges.
Carlson's right, make sure the time isn't bunged up. Yup - if the time is out Kerberos authentication will fail. I always forget the time one, usually I'll double check the clock and adjust it without thinking about it that's how used to it I am. Are you connecting to your network via wireless or cable? As wireless can cause problems with domains and logging in. I uninstalled all the patches installed yesterday, though there were 4 that I couldn't remove.
They were related to MS office and Visio. I also uninstalled the antivirus program from the machine. I set it to automatic and then tried to start it. It says it started then stopped, so I rebooted. It was still not "started" after the reboot. Looking in the event viewer, it says that it was stopped because the machine is in a workgroup and this service is not required in that configuration.
